What if the very things we do to feel safe and in control are actually preventing us from fully experiencing our lives?
In this episode of The Unfolding, clinical psychologist Dr. Randy Berlin and his longtime collaborator Jess explore The Practice, a way of meeting life with greater awareness, presence, acceptance, and trust.
But what does it actually mean to surrender control? And why can something that makes perfect sense intellectually feel so difficult to put into practice?
Through personal stories and reflections, Randy and Jess explore how our conditioning, protective patterns, and beliefs about ourselves can shape the way we experience the world, often without our awareness.
Jess shares how her lifelong independence and ability to anticipate problems, once considered her greatest strengths, were also expressions of hypervigilance that made it difficult to relax and be present. Randy reflects on his own tendency to seek safety through understanding, achievement, and the need to prove his worth.
Together, they explore the difference between understanding a concept and developing the capacity to actually live it.
The conversation moves through self-worth, unconscious patterns, the stories we tell ourselves, and the difference between believing we love ourselves and actively treating ourselves with compassion. They also reflect on what becomes possible when we stop chasing fulfillment and begin discovering moments of joy and contentment within our everyday experiences.
In this episode, we explore:
- The Practice of surrender: Learning to meet life’s experiences without constantly trying to control or resist them.
- Hypervigilance and the illusion of control: How protective patterns can become so familiar that we mistake them for our identity.
- Understanding versus embodying: Why knowing what to do doesn’t always mean we have the capacity to do it.
- Awareness and perception: How our judgments, expectations, and attention influence the way we experience the world.
- Self-worth and striving: Recognizing when achievement and productivity become attempts to prove our value.
- Self-love in action: Moving beyond the idea of loving ourselves toward practicing kindness, compassion, and care.
- Finding joy in the present: Discovering fulfillment without constantly seeking external stimulation or achievement.
The Practice and The Work
This episode also introduces an important distinction at the heart of The Unfolding.
The Practice is how we learn to meet life, moment by moment, with awareness, acceptance, and trust.
The Work is the deeper process of recognizing and working through the conditioning, emotional wounds, beliefs, and protective patterns that can make The Practice difficult.
While distinct, the two are deeply interconnected. In the next episode, Randy and Jess explore The Work in greater depth.
An invitation to reflect
As you listen, consider:
What am I trying to control in my life right now, and what am I afraid might happen if I loosened my grip?
The Unfolding is an invitation to ongoing inquiry, not a collection of definitive answers. These conversations explore complex human experiences through personal observations, professional perspectives, and lived experience.
We welcome your questions, reflections, different perspectives, and respectful disagreements. If something resonates, challenges you, or brings up an experience you’d like us to explore, we’d love to hear from you.
We’re also developing The Unfolding Community, a space where these conversations can continue.
If this episode resonates with you, please share it with someone who might benefit from the conversation.
Join us next time as we explore The Work and how it can help us develop the capacity to put The Practice into action.
